Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru has launched Gate Z, a new social lounge at Terminal 2 aimed at younger, experience-driven travellers as airports globally rethink how passengers spend time before flights.

The lounge, located next to the 080 International Lounge, moves away from the traditional quiet waiting-room format. Instead, it is built around shared spaces for eating, working, relaxing and socialising — reflecting how travel is increasingly treated as part of daily lifestyle rather than just transit.

Gate Z is designed around what the airport calls a “Gen Z mindset” — prioritising ease, technology, sustainability and flexible use of space. The layout features curved seating, open walkways, interactive zones and lighting designed to support both social activity and downtime. AI-based systems have been added to help with navigation and personalisation.

The space includes a café-bar called Bubble & Brew, a casual seating area called The Sipping Lounge, a retro-style Subway Diner with live food counters, and an amphitheatre-style zone for screenings and pop-up events.

Unlike traditional premium lounges, Gate Z is positioned as a shared social area rather than a quiet, members-only space. Airport officials say the idea is to serve a broader mix of travellers, including young professionals, remote workers and frequent flyers who want more flexible pre-flight environments.

The name “Gate Z” was selected through a nationwide contest that invited entries from students and young professionals across India.

Commenting on the launch, George Bennet Kuruvilla, Chief Executive Officer, Bangalore Airport Services Limited (BASL), said that Gate Z reflects BLR Airport’s intent to design spaces that respond to how travel is experienced today. “Inspired by values of inclusivity, authenticity and connection, the lounge brings together comfort, culture and community in a way that feels intuitive and welcoming across age groups. By inviting young Indians to name Gate Z, we extended this philosophy of co-creation, ensuring the space is shaped by the mindset it represents and remains relevant, expressive and people-first,” Kuruvilla said.

The launch is part of BLR Airport’s wider push at Terminal 2 to build experience-led infrastructure alongside capacity expansion, as Indian airports face rising passenger volumes and longer dwell times.
