India is ageing rapidly, but regulation of elder care has not kept pace. By 2036, nearly 15% of the population will be above 60, up from about 10% today. Yet the sector remains unevenly regulated.
Senior care facilities operate under a patchwork of state laws—many adapted from hospital, mental health or social welfare frameworks not designed for long-term elder care.
This has led to wide disparities in quality, safety and accountability, strengthening the case for a national minimum standard (NMS) and accreditation framework.
