New component likely to boost PM Surya Ghar Scheme

NEW DELHI: India has achieved about a quarter of its target of installing rooftop solar systems in 1 crore households by FY27, with only 25 lakh homes covered under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The scheme was launched in February last year.

Installations are expected to accelerate with a new component of the scheme — a utility-led aggregation model, under which discoms can install rooftop solar systems on behalf of households.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy recently cautioned that broad-based progress will remain challenging unless states and their distribution companies (discoms) come onboard. The panel identified lack of awareness as the primary reason for the scheme’s slow adoption.
